Extracranial-Intracranial Bypass Study
The Extracranial-Intracranial Bypass Study (EC-IC) is a prospective registry evaluating EC-IC bypass for carotid occlusion with persistent or unstable symptoms failing medical management. The study has accrued 80 patients from 11 centers over three years with a 24-month follow-up. Sites were selected based on surgical volume and expertise and include three international sites.
Objectives
The specific goals of the EC-IC study are to:
- Perform cerebral revascularization via STA to MCS bypass for symptomatic carotid occlusion patients with less than an 8 percent major peri-operative complication rate.
- Investigate the potential cognitive benefit of revascularization by assessing cognitive function before and after bypass.
Status
The registry has received IRB approval and has been registered with clinicaltrials.gov.
Support
The principal investigators in the registry are Carlos A. David, MD, FAANS; Jacques J. Morcos, MD, FAANS; Fady T. Charbel, MD, FAANS; and Sepideh Amin-Hanjani, MD, FAANS.
The NPA has partnered with Acesis, Inc. for data collection. Acesis, Inc. is a health information technology group based in San Francisco. Funds for the project were donated by a patient and matched by the Wallace Foundation.
